Choosing A Compact Digital Camera

Sunday, February 19th, 2012

Thinking of buying a new compact digital camera? If you are, you would have to know what to look for.

The number one thing that most look at is the design. Remember that a compact digicam won’t be called sleek and slim if it is chunky –this is like circular reasoning but hey, what we are trying to say is that it has to fit in your pouch or pocket and shouldn’t be as heavy as a brick. Buying a digital camera means you want something compact yet powerful which means you probably do not want to do some heavy lifting.

It’s not just about the looks though. It’s like when you are on a date, you first get attracted to the physical appearance of the person but when you’re past that, you would be looking for substance. Now the next thing to look for is image quality –what use is a digital camera that looks good but fails in producing clear photos? It’s not just about the pixels really, you should remember that the higher th optical zoom, the better.

You should also take a look at other features i.e. whether it has an image stabilizer, red eye reduction, has a timer, different effects, continuous shooting options among others. If you are fond of uploading your photos online immediately after taking them, you might also want a compact digital camera with GPS Geotagging capability.

The battery life of the compact digital camera you are about to buy is also important. If it runs on AA batteries, you would have to invest on rechargeable batteries. A camera with a rechargeable battery is a much better choice though. You should also take a look at the memory of the camera itself and whether you can add a memory card or not.

From Digital Cameras To Camera Phones

Friday, January 13th, 2012

South Korean digital camera and smartphone maker Samsung revealed that around 2.5 billion people now has a digital camera but while Samsung and other camera manufacturers are enjoying their popularity in the world of cameras, photography film Kodak is struggling to compete with the market. Critics say that Kodak was not able to adapt to digital photography and won’t ever be as good as the likes of Nikon, Canon and other second tier camera brands such as Samsung and Sony.

About four decades ago however, the photography company was given credit for making the first digital camera ever –an innovation, according to the BBC, that changed the world.

Not everyone knows that Kodak took its very first image in 1975 nearly obliterating the market’s need for camera film. Later on of course, all of us got to go digital and can now even take decent photos on our phones.

It was Steven Sasson who invented the first digital camera for the company. It is unfortunate though that Kodak was not able to fully profit from the said invention as its share price went down last year.

There is very little prospect left for Kodak, experts say and now people are paying more attention to the company than ever before. Some are hoping that it will bounce back somehow.

Although the digital camera is revolutionary on its own, one of the greatest fruits of Kodak’s invention is the advent of the cameras on cell phones.

In 2011, while the international media had a hard time getting into Libya, the people captured the goings on on the ground through their camera phones. The looting that happened in England was also captured by camera phones making them a wonderful invention in terms of keeping the world updated with events that matter. It’s not just the news agencies that benefited from this though, families and individuals also got to capture special moments of their lives.

Lumix G Series

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Panasonic has recently unveiled the new additions to their Lumix G series. The Lumix is a micro four thirds camera, also known as a point-and-shoot camera designed with the aspiring yet less tech-savvy photographer in mind. With a sturdy body just like that of DSRLs,  micro four thirds cams are slightly smaller and slimmer because of the lack of a mirror that are present in digital single lens reflex cameras.

The G10 is an upgrade to Panasonic’s earlier models, the G1 and G2. The G10 allows a wide array of functions found in a DSLR in a novice-friendly design. The G10 sports a 12.1 mega-pixel sensor. Although not so large as the others in the market, the G10 allows for a full 1024 by 720 HD video capture -a feature that can be commonly seen only in expensive digital SLRs.

The G10 is slightly pricier than most micro four third cameras, but with the addition of a 14-42 mm kit lens, it is a bargain considering that it allows you to attach other lenses depending on your preference. Feature-wise, the G10 is loaded to the teeth. It is equipped with an AF tracking that allows easy focusing on moving subjects, and custom color modes. The lens, too, is also equipped with an image stabilizing feature to reduce image blur caused by vibrations or camera shake.

Improving your Digital Camera Vocabulary: Lesson II

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

Here is your second lesson for your digicam lingo. Let’s start with B&W, not the candy and not the restaurant –this means black and white so if someone wants a picture in B&W you already know what it means.

Backlight

This has got to do with your digital camera’s hardware. This is what illuminates your LCD display. The LCD display is where you can view your photos, videos, etc.

Burst Mode

This is your camera’s capability to capture images in a speedy manner through continuous frame capture.

DC Battery

No this does not mean District of Columbia, it means “direct current”. You can see this in your battery for example a 9v DC battery is a direct current battery.

DSLR

You read this one almost all the time but what does it mean? DSLR stands for Digital Single Lens Reflex camera. A DSLR can change lenses. Many of this type of camera are produced by Sony, Fuji, Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sigma, Kodak and Olympus.

Buying a Cam for Newbies

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Photo Courtesy of GetItNextAre you a digital camera rookie? If you think it’s high time to buy a new digital camera but do not have any idea what you should keep in mind, do not let all those glossy cover colored in red, pink or blue fool you. You should take a look at the specs. Here are the things you should not forget when buying a digital camera.

Price

If the camera is pricey it does not mean that it has the best specs compared to cameras that are less expensive. Price is an issue especially for someone who wants to get value for his money so when buying a camera, you should keep in mind that if the price is right, and the specs are amazing and you’re in for a good buy.

Specs

You should remember that the higher the megapixels, the bigger photos you can take so you should take a look how many megapixels the camera you are eyeing has. Not all cameras are created equal so you should take a look at the zoom capability as well. Optical zoom is all about the camera’s lens’ magnifying capability. If the optical zoom has a 300mm lens this means you can do a zoom 30x. If you want a lighter camera though you should opt for one with a smaller zoom because as the zoom capability goes up, the heavier the camera would get. If you however want optimum zoom capability, you should also get a tripod to go with your camera.

Compatibility

Make sure that your new camera is compatible to your other gadgets. You should check as well if it provides a software so you can install that on your computer.

Brand

Choose a reliable brand. Make sure that you buy from a direct store or a reputable shop that sells cameras. Some cameras are knock-offs and you should be wary of these

Cell Phones Hurting Digicams

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Most of the newest cell phones have integrated cameras in them and this may be hurting the market for digital cameras. With a cell phone that can do almost anything for those on the go and the less discriminating, a cell phone with a camera is good enough – no need for a digital camera anymore. While pictures taken from cell phones are not that good, handset manufacturers are trying to tip the market into their favor.

A research firm called iSuppli says that the digital camera market is having a hard time since they are not selling the way they used to. According to iSuppli’s representative Pam Tufegdzic, “Handsets soon may begin to cannibalize the low end of the digital still camera market as they incorporate higher megapixels and flash capabilities.”

This will however not bring much of a damage to the camera market especially for enthusiasts but this means that lower end cameras would have to deal with the competition other than their peers in camera manufacturing.
