From Digital Cameras To Camera Phones

Friday, January 13th, 2012

South Korean digital camera and smartphone maker Samsung revealed that around 2.5 billion people now has a digital camera but while Samsung and other camera manufacturers are enjoying their popularity in the world of cameras, photography film Kodak is struggling to compete with the market. Critics say that Kodak was not able to adapt to digital photography and won’t ever be as good as the likes of Nikon, Canon and other second tier camera brands such as Samsung and Sony.

About four decades ago however, the photography company was given credit for making the first digital camera ever –an innovation, according to the BBC, that changed the world.

Not everyone knows that Kodak took its very first image in 1975 nearly obliterating the market’s need for camera film. Later on of course, all of us got to go digital and can now even take decent photos on our phones.

It was Steven Sasson who invented the first digital camera for the company. It is unfortunate though that Kodak was not able to fully profit from the said invention as its share price went down last year.

There is very little prospect left for Kodak, experts say and now people are paying more attention to the company than ever before. Some are hoping that it will bounce back somehow.

Although the digital camera is revolutionary on its own, one of the greatest fruits of Kodak’s invention is the advent of the cameras on cell phones.

In 2011, while the international media had a hard time getting into Libya, the people captured the goings on on the ground through their camera phones. The looting that happened in England was also captured by camera phones making them a wonderful invention in terms of keeping the world updated with events that matter. It’s not just the news agencies that benefited from this though, families and individuals also got to capture special moments of their lives.

1920s Camera and Mt. Everest

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Let’s talk about history for a quick bit and this is with regards to a camera possibly manufactured in the year 1924 or maybe a few years before that. In 1924, there was a climber who tried to go to the top of Mount Everest. This however was a failure and the first people to reach the summit were Tenzig Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary –the two of course made it alive. The first men to try and reach the summit are believed to be Andrew Irvine and George Mallory and there is now a dispute that they may have succeeded in their endeavor. They climbed Mt. Everest in 1924 nearly 50 years before Norgay and Hillary.

Irvine and Mallory climbed the mountain but never returned. Lots of expeditions were launched to find the two or at least recover their remains. After a few expeditions, Mallory was found but Irvine’s body is still missing.

According to those manning the expeditions, they key to this mystery is to find Andrew Irvine’s body and the Kodak camera he had in his vest pocket. If this camera is found, there will be photographic evidence if the two actually made it to the top or not. Interesting isn’t it? Let us all hope they will find Irvine and that camera because it would change history and the photos will tell us about Irvine’s and Mallory’s story.

How to Fix a Kodak Camera

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Ok, you went out and purchased an inexpensive Kodak Camera, one of the easyshare models for $129. Now you are having issues with the images being blurry or the lens won’t retract and you want to know what to do with it?
First of all if you open it up yourself and follow one of the self help do-it-yourself repair guides you might as well just toss it out right now. It will save you a couple hours of time and the results will be the same.

Camera Repair Made Simple

Do what I do, with everything… Find a professional who knows what the hell they are doing and take (send) the camera to them.kodak-easy-share-repair

Recently my son’s little Easy Share just started taking crap pictures. Blurry, hazy, fuzzy, whatever you want to call them. At first I thought it was him (he is only 5) so I took a couple of photos – and guess what, I got the same bad pictures he was getting.

So after consulting the manual I quickly decided to spend $88 to get it fixed vs. spending $129 to buy a new one. (ok, I am cheap, but the $41 I saved will be well spend on Adult beverages)

After searching google for Kodak Repair centers I found Teleplan Camera Repair (and about 1 million other people) – Since teleplan recently fixed my XBOX under warranty, I felt comfortable sending them my son’s camera.

To make a short story long, we have the camera back. It is taking great pictures (for a camera that that cost $129+$88) – so if you are having camera issues, do what I do and send your camera out for repair. It will save you the headache of trying to fix it and ruining it, and it will give you something to look forward to as you check for a UPS box everyday for 3 weeks.
