Lumix G Series

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Panasonic has recently unveiled the new additions to their Lumix G series. The Lumix is a micro four thirds camera, also known as a point-and-shoot camera designed with the aspiring yet less tech-savvy photographer in mind. With a sturdy body just like that of DSRLs,  micro four thirds cams are slightly smaller and slimmer because of the lack of a mirror that are present in digital single lens reflex cameras.

The G10 is an upgrade to Panasonic’s earlier models, the G1 and G2. The G10 allows a wide array of functions found in a DSLR in a novice-friendly design. The G10 sports a 12.1 mega-pixel sensor. Although not so large as the others in the market, the G10 allows for a full 1024 by 720 HD video capture -a feature that can be commonly seen only in expensive digital SLRs.

The G10 is slightly pricier than most micro four third cameras, but with the addition of a 14-42 mm kit lens, it is a bargain considering that it allows you to attach other lenses depending on your preference. Feature-wise, the G10 is loaded to the teeth. It is equipped with an AF tracking that allows easy focusing on moving subjects, and custom color modes. The lens, too, is also equipped with an image stabilizing feature to reduce image blur caused by vibrations or camera shake.

Buying a Cam for Newbies

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Photo Courtesy of GetItNextAre you a digital camera rookie? If you think it’s high time to buy a new digital camera but do not have any idea what you should keep in mind, do not let all those glossy cover colored in red, pink or blue fool you. You should take a look at the specs. Here are the things you should not forget when buying a digital camera.

Price

If the camera is pricey it does not mean that it has the best specs compared to cameras that are less expensive. Price is an issue especially for someone who wants to get value for his money so when buying a camera, you should keep in mind that if the price is right, and the specs are amazing and you’re in for a good buy.

Specs

You should remember that the higher the megapixels, the bigger photos you can take so you should take a look how many megapixels the camera you are eyeing has. Not all cameras are created equal so you should take a look at the zoom capability as well. Optical zoom is all about the camera’s lens’ magnifying capability. If the optical zoom has a 300mm lens this means you can do a zoom 30x. If you want a lighter camera though you should opt for one with a smaller zoom because as the zoom capability goes up, the heavier the camera would get. If you however want optimum zoom capability, you should also get a tripod to go with your camera.

Compatibility

Make sure that your new camera is compatible to your other gadgets. You should check as well if it provides a software so you can install that on your computer.

Brand

Choose a reliable brand. Make sure that you buy from a direct store or a reputable shop that sells cameras. Some cameras are knock-offs and you should be wary of these

Camera ala Bond, James Bond

Friday, February 26th, 2010

For those who want to be like James Bond, you can now get your very own camera and phone integrated into a watch. This is not the usual camera we see every day and since it is small, the quad-band wrist watch cell phone is only equipped with a 1.3 megapixel camera. It does not only take pictures though its video recording ready as well. It works in almost every country and it operates in 12 languages – Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Turkish, Spanish, Italian, Russian, German, Arabic, French, and English.

With a weight of 0.55 this could be the smallest camera (and cell phone) ever. What is more amazing is that you can actually save numbers in this wrist watch phone and it is capable of sending MMS and SMS. You can chat on your wrist watch phone and can even listen to your MP3s. How’s that for a camera that also tells accurate time?

A Digital Camera in the Deep Blue Sea

Monday, February 15th, 2010
Ever wonder how long a memory card can survive in the deep blue sea? Back in late 2008, a couple named Dennis and Barbara Gregory lost their digicam while on the Queen Mary. The two damaged their other camera and with the other digital camera gone, there was no way for the two to have photos from their journey to the Atlantic.
A year later, Benito Estevez caught a rather odd fish, turns out it wasn’t a fish at all and yes, you guessed it –it’s the Gregory’s digital camera. Of course Mr. Estevez did not know who the owners of the camera were but salvaged it anyway. To his surprise, the memory card still works and it was able to keep a few of the Gregory’s photos intact.
Benito Estevez posted the remaining photos online in the hopes that someone would recognize them. His post did not get much attention though until the story was broadcasted on BBC.  Luckily, a friend of the couple saw the show and told them about their missing camera.
The Gregory’s got their photos back and now everybody’s happy. If you are interested on the make and model if this digital camera and its memory card –it was not revealed in the reports –maybe you can send an email to the Gregory’s.

100 Years of Infrared Photography

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Camera lovers are celebrating the 100th year of infrared photography this year. The first infrared photos were released by a professor in the name of Robert Wood. The photos came out in October of 1910 making this year’s the 100th year of infrared photography.

The type of photography relied on infrared film years before. Today however it is much easier to get this kind of effect, either you use your digital camera or use a software that can edit the colors of your shots.

For camera lovers who would like to try this out, you will only need a UV filter –this will block natural lighting conditions making infrared photos possible. Infrared photography is a unique art and it can help budding photographers create a more unique atmosphere for an otherwise familiar photo.

There are infrared cameras for sale online and there are software that can help you achieve these effects too. One example is Centurion’s infrared linescan camera. This type of camera however is more for security and military use so it would be better if you just get a UV filter for your camera.

The Right Time to Buy a Camera

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Many people ask “When is the right time to buy a camera?” To answer this rather mind boggling question, many salespeople say that the best time to purchase a digital camera is when you need one. Photography enthusiasts would have to disagree to this but in a practical sense –this advise is actually sound.

However, if you want the latest camera or something fresh from the oven as they say;  do not buy right NOW because camera manufacturers usually announce their newest additions to their series of cameras. Majority of these manufacturers announce their newest digital cameras on the first quarter of the year i.e. from January to February. Most of the time these cameras will make it to the store shelves around February or March. So if you are itching to buy a new camera, go to stores in March. The second announcement usually happen in the month of September and the items will be released just in time for Christmas. The waiting game might be the hardest part of it all but if you really want the latest camera, all you have to do is save your money and wait. Or, if you find a camera that you really like then go ahead and buy it.

Questions to Ask Before Buying a Camera

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Planning to buy a new camera? Now that you have seen the newest models from Nikon, Olympus and Sony you might be interested in buying a new shutter gadget. But what are the things you should consider when buying a camera apart from the specs?

Before you go out to buy that camera here are a few questions you should answer first:

  • What will you use the camera for?
  • Will you be taking portraits, macro shots, sports shots, or landscapes?
  • What is your budget?
  • Under what conditions will you be using your camera for? Would it be indoors, low light or bright or outdoors?
  • What is your experience in using cameras?
  • Will you be using auto mode most of the time or do you want to learn photography in its purest sense?
  • What size of camera do you need? Is portability important to you?

It would be good if you answer these questions before purchasing a camera. By doing this you will be able to make the right decision on which camera to buy.

1920s Camera and Mt. Everest

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Let’s talk about history for a quick bit and this is with regards to a camera possibly manufactured in the year 1924 or maybe a few years before that. In 1924, there was a climber who tried to go to the top of Mount Everest. This however was a failure and the first people to reach the summit were Tenzig Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary –the two of course made it alive. The first men to try and reach the summit are believed to be Andrew Irvine and George Mallory and there is now a dispute that they may have succeeded in their endeavor. They climbed Mt. Everest in 1924 nearly 50 years before Norgay and Hillary.

Irvine and Mallory climbed the mountain but never returned. Lots of expeditions were launched to find the two or at least recover their remains. After a few expeditions, Mallory was found but Irvine’s body is still missing.

According to those manning the expeditions, they key to this mystery is to find Andrew Irvine’s body and the Kodak camera he had in his vest pocket. If this camera is found, there will be photographic evidence if the two actually made it to the top or not. Interesting isn’t it? Let us all hope they will find Irvine and that camera because it would change history and the photos will tell us about Irvine’s and Mallory’s story.
